Winter is the most inconvenient season for those who wear glasses or contact lenses.

Due to the double whammy of dry weather and heaters, contact lenses become very dry and uncomfortable.

And if you wear glasses, you experience fogging every time you get on and off the subway, or go in and out of your office, classroom, or restaurant.

This obstructs your vision and can make you look a bit silly.

That's why winter is considered peak season for eye clinics,

with many people visiting for vision correction surgery.

However, the end and beginning of the year are also seasons with many gatherings and events,

often requiring alcohol consumption or makeup application.

Today, we'll take some time to find out when you can exercise and apply eye makeup after SMILE LASIK.

When can I exercise after SMILE LASIK?

Nowadays, it's a trend for younger generations to consistently manage their health,

so many people enjoy hobbies like fitness, running, Pilates, yoga, and swimming.

SMILE LASIK minimizes corneal damage, allowing for faster recovery compared to other vision correction surgeries,

so daily activities like washing your face or light stretching are possible from the very next day.

However, aerobic exercises that might make you breathless or short of breath

are only possible after at least one week.

Also, because there's a risk of increased intraocular pressure,

it's best to refrain from lifting very heavy weights or engaging in sports with a risk of trauma (like soccer)

for one month.

A sudden increase in intraocular pressure can also lead to glaucoma.

The same guidelines apply to exercise after LASIK and LASEK:

light exercise is possible after one week, and strenuous exercise after one month.

However, LASEK requires relatively more caution.

LASEK needs careful management during the period when the corneal epithelial cells are recovering.

While light exercise after one week and strenuous exercise after one month remain the same,

it takes 3 to at least 6 months for the epithelium to fully recover,

so you must always wear sunglasses and UV-blocking glasses when exercising outdoors,

and be careful to prevent sweat from getting into your eyes.

When can I apply eye makeup after SMILE LASIK?​

After SMILE LASIK, you can wash your face starting the very next day,

and apply face makeup also from the next day.

However, eye makeup, similar to alcohol consumption, requires a one-week resting period.

Eye makeup has a high possibility of introducing harmful foreign substances into the eyes,

and can cause direct irritation to the corneal surface, so for one week,

eye makeup must be avoided.

LASIK also allows for eye makeup, face makeup, and face washing within the same timeframe as SMILE LASIK.

For LASEK, both face washing and face makeup are possible after the protective lens is removed,

and eye makeup is possible after 2 weeks.

SMILE LASIK is known as a very fast-recovering surgery because the incision site can heal as early as the same day.

However, recovery speed varies from person to person, and corneal characteristics also differ,

so it's important to consult with your ophthalmologist and follow the precautions for accurate vision recovery.
