Hello.

I am Dr. Kim Tae-young, the head director of Bareunyoung Dental Clinic in Cheonggu-dong, where the head director directly explains treated cases.

Recently, with increased aesthetic interest, many patients are showing interest in laminates.

Generally, cases requiring laminates include congenitally small teeth, like microdontia, or teeth that are relatively small compared to the arch space, where treatment aims to fill the gaps between teeth.

As shown in the photos, when teeth are small and not of a typical shape, laminates offer a treatment method to restore the empty spaces without extensive tooth reduction.

Recently, laminates are widely used not only for treating empty spaces but also for achieving overall harmony in tooth shape or subtly correcting tooth alignment.

I will introduce a recent laminate treatment case.

Gaps between teeth and small teeth

The canine teeth are small, and there are gaps between the teeth, making them appear uneven and aesthetically in need of treatment.

The canine teeth were microdontic, smaller than typical tooth size, creating surrounding spaces and gaps between the teeth.

Considering the gaps between the teeth and the small canines, it seemed that treating six teeth simultaneously would achieve overall balance, but the patient initially wished to restore only the most visible central gaps.

Only the central large front teeth were treated.

Since there was sufficient space for these teeth, no-prep laminates were possible, and the treatment was completed without any tooth reduction.

The patient was satisfied because the large gaps were filled compared to before treatment, and they mentioned they would consider other teeth later.

They had been doing well for over two years without any fractures.

The reason I am showing these photos again is that they wanted to get laminates for the surrounding canine teeth as well.

Initially, they were satisfied after the most uncomfortable part was resolved, but over time, the small canines, the gaps between teeth, and chipped teeth continued to catch their eye.

Laminates were designed using a diagnostic model.

Since they did not want overly white teeth, a natural shade was chosen, and with balanced space distribution for all six teeth, the result looks much more natural and morphologically complete than the previous teeth.

Of course, during treatment, because the teeth were small and there was sufficient space, we were able to preserve the teeth through minimal reduction.

Since the patient wanted the most natural shade, we created a bright color that matched the surrounding teeth as closely as possible.

There were no issues with the alignment of the surrounding teeth and lower front teeth, so they were finished with whitening only.

When is the best time for laminates?

Not all cases of irregularly aligned teeth can be covered with laminates.

For the even teeth we desire, protruding parts inevitably require reduction.

Minor protrusions can be treated with laminates through minimal reduction, but in other cases, orthodontic treatment may need to precede.

As in the case introduced today,

laminates are an ideal treatment method with minimal tooth reduction for creating space due to tooth size disharmony or restoring tooth shape.

Pre-consultation regarding pre-treatment diagnosis and considerations is essential, and if necessary, creating a diagnostic model is also required.

Frequently Asked Questions

In what cases are front tooth laminates necessary?

Front tooth laminates may be necessary when teeth are too small, such as microdontia, when there are gaps between teeth, or to achieve overall harmony in tooth shape. They are also used for subtle orthodontic corrections.

Is extensive tooth reduction required for laminates?

No, extensive tooth reduction is not required in all cases. If the teeth are small or there is sufficient space, treatment can be done with minimal or no-prep laminates.

Can laminates solve all tooth problems?

No, not all cases can be covered by laminates. Minor protrusions can be corrected with minimal reduction, but in cases of severe protrusion, orthodontic treatment may need to precede.

How is the color selected for laminates?

The laminate color is chosen to match the patient's natural tooth color. To enhance the aesthetic outcome, a natural bright color that harmonizes with the surrounding teeth is created, rather than overly white.

What is the satisfaction level after laminate treatment?

When laminates are used effectively in applicable cases, they can achieve dramatic aesthetic results. Initially, patients may be satisfied with partial treatment, but over time, they may desire additional treatment for overall balance.

What preparations are needed before laminate treatment?

Before laminate treatment, thorough consultation regarding pre-diagnosis and considerations is essential. If necessary, a diagnostic model may be created to plan the treatment.
