When Can You Drive After Presbyopia Cataract Surgery? Cataract Precautions

Hello, this is Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic 😊

Driving is an important part of our daily lives,

so it's a common question many patients ask after surgery.

Today, we'd like to provide information about driving after cataract surgery,

and answer other frequently asked questions from patients.

When can I drive after presbyopia cataract surgery?

Generally, driving after cataract surgery is possible

after about 1-2 weeks.

However, this varies depending on individual recovery speed,

so we recommend starting with short distances

and gradually increasing the range.

Initially, start with very short distances near your home during the day, including parking.

Then, progress to medium distances on familiar routes.

You should gradually extend the distance.

Especially, since glare can temporarily worsen after surgery,

we recommend attempting night driving last.

Also, some individuals may only be able to drive after 3-4 weeks,

so please consult with your ophthalmologist before starting to drive.

At our eye clinic, we comprehensively assess patients' vision recovery and eye condition

to determine when it's safe to drive.

Precautions for driving after presbyopia cataract surgery

After 1-2 weeks, or 3-4 weeks,

and once your doctor gives you the all-clear, you can gradually start driving.

However, driving requires

very sensitive and quick reactions to various surrounding environments.

It's important to quickly recognize not only the distance from the car in front and behind, traffic lights, etc.,

but also road signs and external conditions like rain or wind.

Therefore, first and foremost,

1. Be careful of glare from sunlight

As mentioned earlier, glare can temporarily worsen after surgery,

so wearing sunglasses can help protect your eyes from light.

We strongly recommend wearing them, especially on bright, sunny days.

2. Be careful of fatigue from long-distance driving

Long-distance driving increases eye fatigue.

Therefore, if you must drive long distances,

we recommend taking frequent, sufficient breaks.

3. Be careful of night driving

Avoid night driving in the early stages after cataract surgery,

and we recommend attempting night driving last.

4. Be careful with medication use

Painkillers, antibiotics, and other medications prescribed after surgery

can affect driving, so you must consult with your specialist.

So, what other precautions are there

besides driving?

Washing your face after surgery: after one week

The most important thing after surgery is

to prevent water from entering your eyes.

For at least one week, when washing your face or hair,

no water should get into your eyes.

Therefore, it's best to have a caregiver wash your hair,

or get a shampoo at a hair salon.

For washing your face, gently wipe with a wet wipe,

or use your hands to clean only the surrounding areas, like a ‘cat wash’,

making sure no water gets into your eyes.

Other precautions

To reduce the risk of infection after surgery,

avoid excessive eye rubbing and lifting heavy objects.

Also, activities that use your eyes a lot, such as reading, watching TV, and using a computer,

should be started gradually after consulting with your doctor.

It's best to avoid alcohol, hair dyeing, and perms for about a month,

and if you experience severe pain or any abnormalities in your eyes after surgery,

you should visit the hospital immediately.
