SBS Biz 'Lively Economy Information Talk Talk' 'Unconditionally Go' Lee Sang-jun, Kim Geun-hye

Comedian Lee Sang-jun and fitness model Kim Geun-hye visited our Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic for SBS Biz’s ‘Lively Economy Information Talk Talk’ segment, ‘Unconditionally Go’.

Mr. Lee Sang-jun mentioned that his eyes have been dry and itchy recently, making it difficult to go even a day without artificial tears. He also said that due to dry eyes, lights don’t appear clear, and afterimages seem to linger.

After various examinations, it was found that his vision in both eyes was good, but dry eye syndrome was progressing due to frequent mobile phone use. To treat the underlying dry eye syndrome, we decided to treat the inflammation of the meibomian glands using warm compresses and laser therapy.

Director Yeom Dong-ju explained, ‘The biggest reason tears dry out is when the function of the meibomian glands is weakened. If oil is secreted well from the meibomian glands, tear evaporation decreases, which helps alleviate dry eye syndrome.’ He added that if objects appear blurry or your eyes are frequently itchy, dry eye syndrome may already be progressing due to weakened meibomian gland function.

The meibomian glands are 20-25 oil glands located along the eyelid margins and eyelash areas, resembling a bunch of grapes. They can become blocked or inflamed due to aging and external irritants (fine dust, yellow dust, frequent eye makeup). If inflammation persists, oil is not secreted normally, thinning the lipid layer that forms the tear film, which causes tears to evaporate easily. Dry eye syndrome should not be neglected as it can lead to redness, vision loss, and other eye diseases. Preventing tear evaporation alone can prevent dry eye syndrome to some extent. You can also perform a simple meibomian gland massage at home.

Pro Tip!

How to massage your meibomian glands at home!

Simply use a warm, clean washcloth heated to 40-45 degrees Celsius and place it over your closed eyes for about 5-7 minutes. It’s important to maintain the washcloth’s temperature at 40-45 degrees, as hardened oil won’t melt if the washcloth cools down. Warm compress massage using a washcloth helps melt blocked meibomian glands, allowing oil to be secreted normally.

At Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic, we have devices for warm massage and LASER equipment to facilitate smoother oil secretion from the meibomian glands. If you are experiencing discomfort from dry eyes, we encourage you to visit our clinic and receive our specialized dry eye program, ‘Smile Eye Care’, which will be of further help! ^^
