Rhinoplasty Swelling Period and Management Methods
Understand the swelling period and effective management methods after rhinoplasty to aid in a faster recovery. Learn about the causes of swelling, a detailed timeline, and essential post-operative care tips.

Rhinoplasty is a significant surgery that many people choose to improve not only aesthetic aspects but also functional ones.
However, swelling, bruising, and pain can accompany the surgery. While these are temporary
phenomena, understanding the swelling period and management methods can help alleviate them quickly and
aid in recovery. Therefore, today we will discuss the swelling period after rhinoplasty and methods to reduce swelling after nose surgery.
Why does swelling occur?
There are various reasons why swelling occurs after rhinoplasty. Post-operative swelling is a natural part of the recovery process, but
if inflammation, infection, fever, pain, and discharge persist after a certain period, it is crucial to consult a specialist
and take prompt action.

1. Tissue damage due to incision
Rhinoplasty involves making a micro-incision in the columella or inside the nose, inserting implants and cartilage, and then suturing.
During this process, blood vessels naturally expand and tissue fluid accumulates, which can lead to swelling.
2. Changes in blood and lymphatic circulation
After rhinoplasty, blood circulation in and around the nose can temporarily become irregular. This happens when there is significant bleeding between the skin tissues during the nose surgery, leading to a lot of clotted blood. The arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels, which transport blood and bodily fluids, can become blocked, causing fluid accumulation and swelling.
The more clotted blood there is between the skin tissues, the more severe the swelling can be.
3. Compression and fixation
After rhinoplasty, a splint is applied to the bridge of the nose to support it and prevent movement while it settles. Because compression is used in this process,
physical pressure is applied to the area, which can hinder proper blood circulation and cause swelling.
What is the swelling period?

● Days 1-2: For the first two days, you may experience swelling and bruising on your nose. Immediately after surgery, the nose is fixed with a splint and cotton inside, which can cause discomfort due to swelling and pressure. Usually, the cotton inside the nose is removed the day after surgery. For the first 1-3 days after surgery, it is best to get plenty of rest and apply cold compresses to constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling. During this time, applying a warm compress can increase blood flow and cause bleeding, so it is recommended to use cold compresses only.
● Days 3-7: This is when swelling is most severe. Bruising may be clearly visible, and swelling can extend not only to the nose but also to surrounding areas. Typically, stitches and the splint are removed on the 7th day after nose surgery. At this stage, it is important to alternate between warm and cold compresses to aid blood circulation. Warm compresses increase the surface temperature of the body and relax and expand capillaries, which helps blood circulation and can reduce bruising and swelling.
● 2 weeks-1 month: Swelling gradually begins to subside. From this point, daily discomfort significantly decreases, and bruising gradually disappears.
● After 3 months: Most major swelling will have subsided, but it may take more time for the tip of the nose or the overall shape of the nose to fully settle.
● 6 months-1 year: The final shape of the nose is confirmed, swelling completely disappears, and natural results can be observed.
During this period, it is important to avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and smoking for at least one month, as these can irritate the nose. It is also recommended to avoid spicy, salty, irritating, or tough foods as much as possible. If you are aware of and strictly follow the precautions given by the hospital, you can expect a sufficiently fast recovery and a return to daily life.
