Hello! This is Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic.
Today, we will take some time to learn about styes,
including their causes, early symptoms, and how to heal them quickly.

What is a stye?
A stye is caused by a localized bacterial infection
in the eyelid.
It is commonly known to be caused by Staphylococcus bacteria.
This Staphylococcus infection often occurs when bacteria
directly come into contact with the eye during daily life.
In women,
when applying cosmetics,
the cosmetics can irritate the eye,
allowing bacteria to penetrate the eye
and cause a stye.
Also, styes can occur due to bacteria on the hands.
Furthermore, when stress is high or
the body is fatigued due to overwork,
and immunity is lowered,
styes can also develop.
Lastly, relatively high sebum secretion
from the skin can also be a cause of styes.

The best way to prevent styes is to
maintain regular eating habits and
sleep patterns to keep your immunity
and body rhythm in check,
and to consistently practice good handwashing habits.
<Early Symptoms and Types of Styes>
There are three types of styes:
Chalazion
External hordeolum
Internal hordeolum
In total, there are 3 types.

1. Chalazion
A hard lump can be felt
under the skin at the edge of the eyelid.
A chalazion is a chronic
granulomatous inflammation
that does not involve swelling or
inflammation of the eye area.

2. External Hordeolum
The edge of the eyelid swells
and causes pain.
The affected area of an external hordeolum
becomes hard, and over time,
the surrounding area also
swells with inflammation.

3. Internal Hordeolum
An internal hordeolum is located
deeper than an external hordeolum.
It usually appears like a pimple
on the inner part of the eyelid.
Initially, it is not felt by hand, but over time,
a foreign body sensation is accompanied,
and the pain intensifies.

<How to Heal and Prevent Styes Quickly>
Let's learn about how to heal styes.
1) Warm compresses and immune-boosting activities
Generally,
styes naturally subside or disappear
after about a week.
However, to heal a little faster,
it is good to take early action.
Taking vitamins or
improving the quality of your diet and sleep
can be helpful.
Also, applying a warm compress
to the affected area, rather than a cold compress,
can be effective.
2) Antibiotic prescription
The fastest way to heal is to
visit an ophthalmologist,
get examined by a specialist,
and take prescribed antibiotics.
3) Do not remove styes at home
Styes sometimes heal a little faster
if they burst naturally.
However, if a stye is aesthetically unpleasing,
and you intentionally squeeze the inflamed part of the stye
to heal it quickly,
the symptoms will worsen, so this is an action that should never be done.

If a stye persists for more than a week,
the swelling does not go down,
the pain continues, or
it continues to spread to surrounding areas,
you should seek ophthalmological care.
If the symptoms of the stye worsen,
please get a prescription for ointment or antibiotic cream,
oral medication, etc., as prescribed by the ophthalmologist.
Also, in some cases,
surgical treatment may be necessary for a stye.
