LASIK for Students: FAQs and Student Discounts | Gangnam Station Eye Clinic
Find answers to common questions about LASIK for students, including age requirements, preparation, and same-day surgery, plus details on student discounts at Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic.

Hello, this is Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic!
First, to all of you who have completed the major hurdle of the Suneung (CSAT),
you truly worked very hard.
Now, with the mindset of ‘breaking free from glasses and starting anew!’,
many of you will be looking for LASIK student discount benefits.
In this article, we will summarize the most frequently asked questions by students and parents considering vision correction surgery,
and at the same time, provide information on ‘LASIK student discounts’ and how to utilize them.
How old do I have to be for vision correction surgery?

Generally, by the age of 18, eye growth is mostly complete,
and vision changes often stop,
making surgery after this point more stable.
However, it is important to note that ‘age 18’ is not an absolute criterion.
This is because the rate of eye growth varies for each individual.
In some cases, eye growth may not stop even after the age of 18,
so it is crucial to confirm that eye growth has ceased through a precise examination.
In other words, the usual age for surgery is after 18, but
in reality, ‘completion of eye growth + examination results’ are more important criteria.
Should I bring my old glasses or contact lenses?

Yes, it is good to bring them.
By looking at the changes in the prescription of your existing glasses,
we can estimate how much your vision has changed in recent months,
which serves as a good indicator.
If you wore contact lenses, you must visit after observing a sufficient period of not wearing lenses before the examination.
This is because if the cornea is subtly pressed due to contact lens wear,
it can lead to errors in corneal shape or vision measurement.
The precise examination conducted before surgery significantly affects the results, so
please make sure to ‘bring your glasses or lenses and adhere to the contact lens non-wear period’.
Is same-day surgery possible with the LASIK student discount?

Same-day surgery is possible in most cases.
However, certain conditions must be met.
✅Eye growth must have stopped, and vision changes are deemed minimal.
✅The contact lens non-wear conditions must have been sufficiently observed.
✅There should be no specific ophthalmological abnormalities in the examination results that would hinder surgery.
If the above conditions are met, same-day surgery is entirely possible.
(However, this may vary by hospital, so prior inquiry is necessary.)
I still have practical exams/interviews after the Suneung; can I have surgery in between?

This is also a common concern for students and parents.
While it depends on the surgical method and individual recovery speed,
for example, with New Smile LASIK performed at our clinic,
vision recovery begins as early as 5-6 hours later,
and most can resume daily activities (showering and skin makeup) from the next day.
Therefore, even if you have interviews or essays remaining, surgery might be possible, but
if you have time, we recommend scheduling the surgery with a bit more leeway.
