LASIK Eligibility Age for Students (Feat. Vision Correction Age and Precautions)
Discover the ideal age for vision correction surgery like LASIK for students, along with crucial precautions and special discounts available after the Suneung exam.

Hello, this is Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic 😊
After tomorrow, October will end,
and November, the month of the Suneung (CSAT), will arrive.
After the Suneung, students often start doing things
they wanted to do but postponed due to their studies.
In particular, many seem to be planning vision correction surgeries such as LASIK, LASEK, and SMILE.
Many students who have finished the Suneung visit our clinic,
dreaming of vision correction surgery with excitement before starting their freshman year,
and frequently inquire about the eligible age for vision correction, precautions, and student discount events.
So, when is the eligible age for vision correction?
Can students who have just finished the Suneung undergo vision correction immediately?
Also, what are the precautions for vision correction that we might not know about?

< Eligible Age for Vision Correction Surgery? >

Most students who have finished the Suneung are at an age where vision correction surgery is possible.
Generally, by the age of 18, eye growth is complete,
and changes in vision (progression of myopia and astigmatism) stop.
At this point, stable vision correction is possible,
so if there are no specific issues in other examinations, same-day surgery may even be possible.
However, what's more important than age is the individual's rate of eye growth.
Occasionally, eye growth may not stop even after the age of 18,
so it is crucial to visit the hospital for a precise examination.
In particular, if your current vision differs significantly from when you got your glasses less than 6 months ago,
it is necessary to more closely check whether eye growth is still ongoing.
So, apart from age, what other precautions should be taken before vision correction surgery?
< Precautions to Know Before Examination/Surgery? >

As mentioned earlier, to check for changes in vision compared to your previous glasses,
it is advisable to bring your old glasses when visiting for an eye examination.
Also, if you usually wear contact lenses, you must adhere to the lens-free period:
For regular soft lenses, at least 3-5 days. For hard lenses or toric soft lenses, at least 5-7 days. For orthokeratology (dream) lenses, at least 1 month.
Accurate examination is only possible after observing the lens-free period before your visit.
If you visit without observing the lens-free period,
the cornea may be subtly pressed by the lenses, leading to inaccuracies in corneal shape and vision.
If you wish to have same-day surgery, a few additional precautions apply:
First, it is advisable to bring sunglasses in case LASEK is performed,
and it is best to visit with a bare face, without makeup.
However, nowadays, many ophthalmology clinics performing vision correction usually have cleansing products available,
so surgery is possible after washing your face with the provided products.
Also, you should not wear perfume on the day of surgery.
This is an unexpected precaution that many people might not know.
Due to the sensitive nature of laser equipment to perfume,
wearing perfume may make same-day surgery difficult.
< How to Find the Right Surgery for You >

Before vision correction surgery, about 70 types of examinations are performed on the entire eye,
and the most suitable surgery is determined considering eye condition, lifestyle, and recovery time availability.
If you have sufficient rest time, LASEK can be considered,
but for students who have finished the Suneung but still have schedules such as essays, practical exams, or interviews,
New SMILE LASIK is suitable.

With New SMILE LASIK, vision gradually recovers and becomes clear as early as 5-6 hours later,
and for most, vision recovers enough for daily life by the next day.
Furthermore, showering, facial makeup, and light exercise are possible from the day after surgery,
and the surgical incision is small, about 1-2mm, ensuring corneal stability
and minimizing damage to the tear film, making it the most optimized vision correction surgery for dry eyes.
Therefore, if you have interviews or practical exam preparations remaining after the Suneung,
or if you are a student who wants to return to daily life quickly,
we recommend undergoing New SMILE LASIK.

Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic is currently
supporting the bright future of students
who have successfully completed the major hurdle of the Suneung

3. Oxygen therapy for dry eye treatment is also provided for students' eyes, who may have suffered from dry eyes.
