How to Help Your Dog Live Longer

Learn how to help your dog live a long and healthy life by focusing on weight management, proper nutrition, and dental care. These factors significantly impact canine longevity.

How to Help Your Dog Live Longer: A Comprehensive Guide

In an era where 3 million households own pets,
dogs are among the most commonly kept companion animals.
Dogs have become cherished family members we wish to keep with us for a long time.
Today, we'll explore ways to help your dog live a long life.

Before we delve into that, the symbol of longevity among animals is undoubtedly the turtle.
Depending on whether their habitat is land or sea, they can live anywhere from 100 to 500 years.
So, why do turtles live so long?

It's all about telomeres.
Human telomere length is 15-20kb.
Each time a cell divides, 50-200bp of the telomere is lost,
and after approximately 450 cell divisions, cells age and die.
However, turtles are different.
Their telomeres can even be restored sometimes.
Furthermore, they easily undergo genetic mutations that enhance immune cell activity,
increasing their defense against viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites.
Many cancer-suppressing genes are also found in them, and their aging is slow, contributing to their longevity.

However, animals like dogs and cats, which spend the most time with humans,
have shorter telomeres compared to humans, resulting in shorter lifespans.
Specifically, the average lifespan of a dog is 12-17 years for small breeds,
10-15 years for medium breeds, and 8-13 years for large breeds.
This can vary by about 10 years depending on the breed, environment, and nutritional status.

So, what are some ways to help your dog live a long life?

1. Weight
Even among dogs of the same breed and similar size, obese dogs have shorter lifespans than those of normal weight.
Obesity also increases the incidence of diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis, which is detrimental.
A daily 30-minute walk can prevent obesity, and nose work can help prevent dementia and depression, so daily walks are essential!

2. Food
Just as human eating habits are important, the same applies to dogs.
Feeding raw food, consisting of fresh vegetables and meat cooked without seasoning instead of processed meat or dry kibble, can extend their lifespan.
For treats, choose products without additives.
For kibble, it's best to select options with high meat content and no processed meat, by-products, or meat mixes.

3. Dental Health
The condition of your dog's teeth also significantly impacts their lifespan.
Excessive plaque can lead to gum inflammation.
This inflammation can worsen into periodontal disease, as well as kidney and heart diseases, so plaque management is a crucial area to focus on.
Never use human toothpaste! It's best to use toothpaste and toothbrushes specifically designed for dogs.
If your dog strongly resists brushing, giving them plaque-removing dental chews can also be an option.
