High Astigmatism: Frequently Asked Questions Before Vision Correction!

Hello, we are 'Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic', an ophthalmology clinic at Gangnam Station that provides 1:1 customized care, from pre-surgical examinations to post-surgical care, for personalized vision correction.
Today, we will briefly look at common questions related to high astigmatism in an OX format, which are frequently asked before actual examinations.

Astigmatism: A refractive error where light passing through the cornea and lens does not focus at a single point on the retina but at multiple points, making it impossible to perceive images clearly.
Since the cornea, which accounts for two-thirds of refraction, is shaped more like a rugby ball with different horizontal/vertical lengths rather than a perfect sphere, most people have some degree of astigmatism.
A commonality among those who truly have no astigmatism is that they absolutely do not rub their eyes!!
Habits of rubbing or pressing on the eyes often cause more harm than good, so caution is needed.

If astigmatism is 5 diopters or more, a physical examination conducted before military enlistment allows up to Grade 4, but Grade 5 (military exemption) is generally not possible.
However, if astigmatism is severe and the maximum corrected visual acuity of one eye is 0.1 or less, it falls under visual impairment and may qualify for Grade 5 military exemption.

Having astigmatism does not mean you cannot wear colored contact lenses.
If you are not wearing them continuously for several days without removing them at night, there should not be a significant problem.
However, if irregular astigmatism is very severe, and you wear colored contact lenses, the lens might rotate in your eye, so caution is needed~!!

This is one of the most frequently asked questions.
In laser vision correction surgery, the correction range for astigmatism is narrower than for myopia, and the accuracy and effectiveness of correction are also known to be lower.
There are two main reasons for this:
The first reason is the change in the astigmatism axis when sitting versus lying down.
The second reason is that astigmatism correction has a higher tendency to regress back to astigmatism compared to myopia correction.
Therefore, sufficient checks are necessary for satisfactory astigmatism correction.
For astigmatism correction, it is a good idea to choose a place that considers these changes in the astigmatism axis during surgery and can manage dry eye symptoms if a large amount of astigmatism is corrected.

This part would be easier to understand if you watch the video.
To briefly explain,
Due to the development of femtosecond laser equipment capable of SMILE surgery, there are many clinical results showing that even high astigmatism of about 5 diopters can be sufficiently corrected, so there is no need to worry too much.
If you are concerned about this before vision correction, please feel free to inquire. Accurate examination for astigmatism and sufficient trust in the ophthalmologist and surgical equipment will lead to good results.

We recommend checking your vision correction through an examination, and since various factors such as individual vision, eye diseases, and cornea need to be checked, it is true that we cannot give you an answer with the exact same numerical values.
However, based on the experience of our clinic's director, even in cases of ultra-high astigmatism with 7 diopters of astigmatism without myopia, it was possible to correct 2 diopters through corneal incision and 5 diopters through SMILE LASIK, for a total of 7 diopters of astigmatism, restoring 1.0 vision. This suggests that SMILE surgery is as effective as LASIK/LASEK for ultra-high astigmatism correction.
Please remember that precise examination and consultation are most important to check the vision correction method suitable for you.
