[Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic] LASIK/LASEK: When can I use my phone after surgery? Will it affect vision recovery?

After LASIK/LASEK, it's crucial to know when you can safely use your phone without hindering vision recovery. This article from Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic explains the recommended recovery period and why limiting screen time is important for optimal healing.

[Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic] LASIK/LASEK: When can I use my phone after surgery? Will it affect vision recovery?

Hello, this is Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic 😊

Everyone, what do modern people look at from the moment they open their eyes until just before they close them?

You’re probably all thinking of cell phones or smartphones.

Smartphones have become an essential item for modern people,

but everyone knows that excessive use is not good for eye health, right?

They make your eyes very dry, so you should adhere to appropriate usage times.

So, when can you start using your phone after LASEK?

There’s a common concern that using a phone after surgery can hinder vision recovery,

and we receive many questions about this from patients considering surgery.

Today, we’ll organize and explore information regarding phone use after LASEK :)

At our clinic, we perform All-Laser LASEK and Today LASEK procedures.

General LASEK is a vision correction method that most people have heard of.

It involves gently removing the outermost epithelial cells of the cornea without creating a corneal flap,

and then using a laser to reshape the corneal stroma.

Here, the methods for removing the epithelium are:

1) Using a brush or medication to remove it

2) Using a laser to remove it

At Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic, we only use method #2 for minimal pain and faster recovery.

Compared to LASIK, it’s more stable and can be applied to patients with thin corneas,

offering a wider range of choices.

In particular, it’s advantageous for cases requiring reoperation as it preserves more corneal thickness.

However, the downsides include post-operative pain and the time required for complete vision recovery.

So, if you desire a surgery with less pain and faster vision recovery,

but your current eye condition makes LASIK difficult and only LASEK is possible, or

if safety is your top priority, what kind of surgery should you consider?

In such cases, you can consider

Today LASEK

.

Compared to general LASEK, Today LASEK allows for faster epithelial regeneration,

and you can achieve the expected vision after 6 months.

By utilizing a 0.5MM laser beam for the surgery,

it allows for more precise work, such as uniformly cutting asymmetrical or irregular corneal surfaces.

Furthermore, it significantly reduces the amount of corneal tissue removed compared to traditional surgeries,

leading to fewer side effects like dry eyes, glare, or corneal haze.

As the name suggests, you can recover within two days and resume daily life without difficulty.

Today LASEK is recommended for those with severe myopia or astigmatism,

and those who desire a quick recovery.

So, after a successful surgery,

when is it best to start using your phone?

As mentioned earlier, LASEK involves removing the outermost epithelial cells of the cornea,

so it takes time for these epithelial cells to recover.

While the recovery period can vary from person to person,

generally, a recovery period of about 2 to 5 days is required after surgery.

During the recovery period, it’s best to avoid using your phone as much as possible

to ensure complete epithelial regeneration.

This is because prolonged exposure to phone light can negatively affect vision recovery.

Many people spend their recovery period watching videos, as going out is difficult after surgery.

However, focusing on videos reduces your blinking rate,

leading to dry and stiff eyes, which increases fatigue.

For at least one week, your cornea will not be fully recovered,

so you must be careful not to make your eyes sensitive.

Please refrain from using smartphones and electronic devices until the protective lenses are removed.

We hope you consider these points carefully before deciding on surgery

and achieve excellent results.

If you are considering LASEK or Today LASEK,

please feel free to contact us anytime for a quick response.

Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic always puts patients first

and prioritizes transparency and safety.

Thank you.
