[Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic] ICL Surgery: Will Vision Remain the Same After 10 or 20 Years?

Hello 😊

This is Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic,

dedicated to providing you with clear vision.

Patients with ultra-high myopia who cannot undergo laser vision correction procedures like SMILE, LASIK, or LASEK

should consider implantable collamer lens (ICL) surgery.

However, ICL surgery is relatively less known compared to general LASIK or LASEK,

leading many people to have questions.

Among the most frequently asked questions are:

‘Will my myopia regress?’
‘Will my vision worsen later?’

These questions primarily concern the maintenance of vision.

ICL surgery corrects vision by inserting a biocompatible special lens into the eye

without altering the cornea.

The biggest advantage of this surgery is that,

unlike laser-based correction methods such as LASIK or LASEK,

it does not change the structure of the cornea by shaving it down.

Therefore, there is minimal corneal damage, and the eye can return to its original state after surgery.

This makes it an excellent option for individuals with

ultra-high myopia or astigmatism, or those with very thin corneas,

where a significant amount of corneal tissue would otherwise need to be removed.

The surgical process begins with:

1. Instillation of anesthetic eye drops.

Anesthetic eye drops are administered before starting the surgery.

2. Peripheral corneal incision.

Next, a small incision of about 2-3mm is made in the periphery of the cornea.

This step is performed to facilitate step 3.

3. Lens insertion.

The lens is inserted through the space created in step 2.

Care must be taken during this process to ensure the lens is correctly positioned.

4. Lens fixation.

Finally, the haptics of the inserted lens are securely fixed

between the iris and the natural lens, completing the surgery.

As with all surgeries, individual results may vary, but

research shows that many patients who have undergone the surgery maintain stable vision even after 10 years.

However, if additional myopia develops due to genetic reasons or poor lifestyle habits,

it can be corrected later with LASEK.

Side effects are also known to occur at a low rate.

This long-term safety is attributed to the excellent quality and strong durability of the lens.

Nevertheless, even with high-quality lenses, 100% safety cannot be guaranteed without regular check-ups.

Therefore, after ICL surgery, it is essential to undergo regular examinations to check the lens condition

and strive to maintain eye health.

This can greatly help in the early detection of complications such as cataracts or glaucoma.

Additionally, you may temporarily experience a foreign body sensation or a stinging feeling after surgery.

During this time, be careful not to rub your eyes,

and when washing your face, be mindful not to put pressure on your eyes.

It is recommended to gently wash your face with a wet wipe on the day of surgery and for the following 3 days.

Alcohol and smoking should be avoided as much as possible immediately after surgery, as they can cause inflammation in the body.

Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical equipment comparable to university hospitals,

allowing for more precise examinations and consultations.

An experienced ophthalmologist with extensive expertise and know-how manages all processes from consultation to surgery,
