About ‘Big Eyes’ and ‘Clear Eyes’

Hello!

I am Kim Seong-hun (Severus Kim), a board-certified plastic surgeon and facial designer.

Today, I will discuss ‘big eyes’ and ‘clear eyes,’ which are common requests from most of our clients.

There are various ways to make eyes appear larger. Even without surgery, skillful eye makeup can create beautiful, big eyes.

In other words, to make eyes larger, while the actual increase in length (in millimeters) through surgery is important, creating the illusion of larger eyes is also crucial.

‘I had all four corners of my eyes opened and underwent ptosis correction, but my eyes don't look much bigger?’

In such cases, although the eyes may have lengthened by a few millimeters numerically, they might appear smaller because an unsuitable surgical method was chosen. What surgical methods can make eyes larger or appear larger?

1. Double Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Double eyelid surgery doesn't actually make the eyes bigger but creates the illusion of larger eyes. If you look closely, the exposure of the pupil (the actual vertical length of the eye) is similar, but the eyes appear larger.

2. Ptosis Correction

Incisional ptosis correction Before / 2 months after surgery

For individuals whose eyes are naturally small due to difficulty opening them, meaning their vertical length is short, simply creating an illusion with double eyelid surgery will not make their eyes larger. In such cases, ptosis correction is necessary for a real increase in the vertical length of the eye.

3. Medial Epicanthoplasty (Inner Corner Incision) and Upper Epicanthoplasty

Medial epicanthoplasty lengthens the horizontal dimension of the inner corner of the eye (towards the nose), while upper epicanthoplasty creates an illusion of larger eyes by making the front line of the double eyelid (towards the nose) appear wider and more open. This is also known as ‘45-degree medial epicanthoplasty.’

4. Lateral Canthoplasty (Outer Corner Incision) and Lower Canthoplasty

About ‘Big Eyes’ and ‘Clear Eyes’ 사진 5
Lateral Canthoplasty, Lower Canthoplasty Before / 4 days after surgery

Lateral canthoplasty is a surgical method that lengthens the horizontal dimension of the eye outwards (towards the temple), thereby increasing the horizontal length of the eye. Lower canthoplasty is the opposite concept of upper canthoplasty and can be thought of as ‘45-degree lateral canthoplasty.’ Lower canthoplasty widens the white area of the outer part of the eye, thereby lengthening the vertical dimension of the outer eye. However, there is an important point here: while medial epicanthoplasty lengthens the eye by the amount it's opened, lateral canthoplasty does not lengthen it by the same amount. This is because the face is round.

Therefore, simply performing a large lateral canthoplasty does not necessarily make the eyes appear significantly larger. Unnecessary lateral canthoplasty can lead to side effects, so it must be decided after thorough consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Rather than blindly undergoing surgeries like opening all four corners of the eyes and pulling the eye-opening muscles with ptosis correction just because you want big eyes, choosing a surgical method that suits or is necessary for you will yield the most optimized results.

I will always strive to be a plastic surgeon who is honest and does not exaggerate.

Thank you.

Hello!

This is Korean plastic surgeon 'Severus Kim', also called 'Seonghun Kim'.

This time I would like to talk about 'big eye' or 'definite eye'.

There are many ways to make eyes bigger or look bigger.

As you know, you can make eyes bigger with make-up.

In Korea, upper eyelid surgery is very popular from teenagers to the elderly because they want to have big, definite eyes. I would like to introduce the surgeries to have big eyes.

1. Double fold surgery

A double fold surgery creates an illusion which makes the eye look bigger. As you see the photo above, the real height of the eye is the same before and after, but it seems to be bigger.

2. Ptosis correction

This operation can lengthen the height of the eye. So it can make your eye truly bigger, not just illusionary.

3. Epicanthoplasty

This operation lengthens the width of the eye. Elongated epicanthoplasty can expose more of the double fold around the medial area, which makes the eye look bigger.

4. Lateral canthoplasty

This operation widens the white area of the eyeball, but the effect is limited because the human face is round, not flat.

Thank you for reading.
