What Types of Nasal Implants Are Available?
Explore the different types of nasal implants used in rhinoplasty, including ear cartilage, septal cartilage, and rib cartilage, to find the best fit for your surgery.

Hello.
This is VIBE Plastic Surgery.

Nasal implants used in rhinoplasty must be stable materials because they need to remain in place for a long time without complications after being inserted into the body.
Today, we will explain in detail the different types of nasal implants used in rhinoplasty.

Types of Nasal Implants?

Ear Cartilage
This is a highly preferred autologous tissue because it not only creates a natural shape but also allows for natural movement, giving a feel similar to the original nose and minimizing any artificial look. Since it is harvested from the innermost part behind the ear, which has almost no functional role, it does not place a significant burden on the body. Furthermore, ear cartilage has characteristics similar to the cartilage at the tip of the nose, making it the most suitable material for creating a natural nasal tip shape.

Septal Cartilage
This is the cartilage located in the center of the nasal cavity. Since it is harvested from inside the nose, no additional external incision is required. However, the amount of septal cartilage available for harvest varies from person to person. In cases where it is difficult to harvest a sufficient amount, additional artificial implants may be necessary. Therefore, a decision should be made after thorough consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon depending on the individual case.
Autologous Rib Cartilage
This involves making a 1.5 to 2 cm incision in the side of the chest where the ribs are located and harvesting about 3 to 4 cm of the internal cartilage. It is primarily used for extending the columella or shaping the nose due to its high support and durability. It is frequently used for low noses, short noses, and revision surgeries. Rib cartilage is broadly divided into two types: autologous rib cartilage and donated rib cartilage. Autologous rib cartilage, as the name suggests, uses your own rib cartilage.
Donated Rib Cartilage
This is material processed for human insertion after being harvested from a donor and undergoing thorough chemical treatment. The advantage is that there is no scarring or pain since the cartilage is not harvested from your own body.
We have looked into the various types of nasal implants. Rhinoplasty is a surgery that requires a high understanding of anatomical structures, aesthetic beauty, and functional issues of the nose. Therefore, everything from the surgical plan to post-operative care must be chosen carefully. We recommend making your decision through a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon when planning rhinoplasty.
