Understanding the Pros and Cons of Donated Rib Cartilage
Learn about donated rib cartilage for rhinoplasty, including its benefits for revision surgery, safety profile, and why it is a popular choice for structural support.

Hello.
This is VIBE Plastic Surgery.
Commonly used cartilages for rhinoplasty include ear cartilage, autologous (self) cartilage, and donated rib cartilage.
When visiting our clinic for consultations, we often notice that some patients have purely negative perceptions of donated rib cartilage.
Therefore, today we would like to explain the pros and cons of donated rib cartilage.
What is Donated Rib Cartilage?
As the name suggests, it refers to rib cartilage donated by another person. After being harvested from a human body, it undergoes thorough chemical processing to be safely processed into a material suitable for insertion into the human body.
Because it undergoes rigorous processing to ensure it does not cause issues within the body, the probability of it causing immunological problems is almost zero.
Reasons for Using Donated Rib Cartilage
✔ When ear cartilage and septal cartilage have already been used in multiple previous surgeries
✔ When the amount of septal cartilage is insufficient
✔ When the septal cartilage is deviated
✔ When both ear and septal cartilage lack sufficient strength
✔ When the patient does not want a scar on their own body
Many people believe that using donated rib cartilage will inevitably lead to warping. However, this is not the case. Since the surgery is performed after making the fully matured cartilage flat, you do not need to worry excessively.

Advantages of Donated Rib Cartilage
It has the advantage of being much larger and stronger than ear or septal cartilage.
Additionally, while using autologous cartilage may cause concerns regarding scarring or physical issues at the harvest site, donated rib cartilage eliminates the burden of scarring since the surgery is performed with donated material.
In the case of rib cartilage, it can be difficult to carve because it is firm, and there is a slightly higher risk of inflammation compared to other autologous tissues. However, to raise and lengthen a short nose, surgery must be performed with firm rib cartilage to achieve satisfactory results.

Are Side Effects of Donated Rib Cartilage Severe?

In cases where the nose is raised excessively, if the patient smokes, or in multiple revision surgeries, blood circulation may be impaired, slightly increasing the risk of inflammation. Absorption rates may also increase, potentially causing the tip of the nose to drop or resulting in a shape different from expectations.
However, in most cases, using donated rib cartilage causes no issues. You should simply be cautious, as the probability of unwanted side effects increases if you push for a surgery that exceeds your natural conditions or if you continue to smoke.

Because every individual has a different nasal condition and aesthetic preference, it is impossible to say which implant is ‘the best’. Therefore, to achieve satisfactory results, you must recognize your own needs and consult thoroughly with a plastic surgery specialist to find the right surgical method before proceeding.
