3. Why Nasal Irrigation is Vital for Post-Op Care

After surgery, the nasal mucosa becomes highly irritated and sensitive, leading to the easy formation of mucus and crusts (boogers).

During the healing process, these crusts can act as a bridge, causing the mucosal surfaces to stick together—a phenomenon known as ‘adhesion’.

Therefore, by using nasal irrigation to prevent excessive buildup of mucus and crusts, you help the internal wounds heal more effectively. ☺️

4. When Should I Start Nasal Irrigation?

At VIBE Plastic Surgery, we typically remove the internal stitches about two weeks after rhinoplasty.

🪡 We recommend starting nasal irrigation after the stitches are removed and continuing for about one month. :)

5. Supplies Needed for Nasal Irrigation

Nose Sweeper (Dedicated Nasal Irrigator)

Sterile Saline Solution (NOT lens solution❌)

Lukewarm boiled water (or filtered tap water)

A large basin or sink

Towel

Nasal irrigation can be done using a Nose Sweeper (a dedicated container) or a syringe.

While syringes are easy to purchase, they have sharp tips that make it difficult to control the angle and depth, which may irritate the surgical site or cause injury. Therefore, they are not highly recommended.

Regarding the solution:

Avoid using raw tap water.

(Purified water is acceptable if the filter is well-maintained!)

The safest water to use when dissolving saline powder is water that has been boiled and then cooled.

The most reliable method is to purchase 💊 sterile saline solution sold at pharmacies!

Saline for contact lenses contains preservatives and must NOT be used for nasal irrigation! 🙅🏻‍♀️

6. How to Perform Nasal Irrigation

When injecting the solution, be careful not to let it flow toward the back of your ears!

⚠️ TIP: Make an ‘Ah~’ sound while injecting.

It’s okay if the solution stays in the nose or flows slightly down the back of the throat.

⬅️➡️ Alternate between the left and right nostrils to let the solution flow through.

Since the solution is gentle, it shouldn’t feel irritating when entering the nose.

Instead of using strong pressure, squeeze the bottle gently for a smooth process.💦👃🏻
