How to manage gum disease when your gums bleed and smell during brushing
Can Waterpiks and oral medications help??
Hello,
I'm Dr. Kim Tae-young, chief director of Baryeunyoung Dental Clinic at Yaksu Station.^^
My gums bleed when I brush, and my teeth feel loose.
This is the most common complaint among patients who visit us for periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease, which we call gum disease, is often difficult to notice in its early stages.
It can be divided into several stages based on its progression.

Gingivitis, an inflammation caused by plaque and tartar buildup on the upper part of the gums,
is easy to manage. If you brush thoroughly or
visit a dental clinic for scaling and gum treatment,
you can recover quickly.
However,
because symptoms are often not severe and temporary,
if gingivitis is left untreated, inflammation will eventually develop
below the gums, progressing to periodontitis, which dissolves the underlying bone.
Can I cure gum disease by taking oral medications like ‘Indol’?
Patients often ask if taking medications like ‘Indol’ or ‘I-eotan’
can cure periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease can never be resolved with oral medication alone.
Periodontal disease is not like a cold where symptoms improve or
are cured by taking medication.

The cause of periodontal disease is
the accumulation of tartar and plaque around the teeth and gums,
leading to bacterial proliferation and an inflammatory response.
The first step is physical cleaning,
and medication should be considered a supplementary measure.
Using oral hygiene aids like a Waterpik or dental floss is much more helpful.
Furthermore, once bone has receded, it cannot be regenerated,
so once periodontal disease progresses, the receded bone cannot recover.
Even with regular scaling,
periodontal disease can be prevented and managed,
which is why regular check-ups are important.
Let's look at treatment methods and prognoses based on the severity.
1. Recovery process after gum treatment for loose teeth

When the patient first visited,
it had been a long time since they had been to the dentist due to COVID-19.
There was a significant amount of tartar buildup on the inner side of the lower front teeth,
and the surrounding gums were very swollen, with tooth mobility.
Fortunately, the inflammation had not progressed significantly,
so after scaling, gum treatment was performed, and the patient recovered healthily.
2. Gum disease often shows no major symptoms until it becomes severe.

The patient said that they suddenly started experiencing food impaction, swollen gums, bleeding, and odor when brushing, which wasn't the case before.
As mentioned earlier,
in the early stages of periodontal disease, there is slight swelling and temporary discomfort,
but it slowly dissolves the gum bone, and by the time symptoms fully appear,
the condition has often progressed significantly.
In the photo, if the red line represents the normal height of the gum bone,
it can be seen that the patient's bone has already receded to the blue line due to periodontitis,
and food and plaque accumulate in that gap, causing bleeding and swelling.
3. Teeth requiring extraction due to advanced periodontal disease

Generally, the inner side of the lower front teeth
is close to the salivary glands, and the brushing angle is not easy,
making it an environment where tartar easily accumulates.
As shown in the photo, tartar has accumulated,
and periodontitis has progressed to the point where the teeth can no longer be supported.
At this stage, even with gum treatment, tooth mobility cannot be controlled,
so in this case, extraction was performed.
How should I maintain gum health? (Using a Waterpik)
Gum disease often shows no major symptoms until it has progressed significantly,
and medication is ineffective. So, how can we prevent it?
The answer is simple:
Effective brushing and the use of oral hygiene aids (Waterpik, dental floss, interdental brushes).
In addition, regular visits to the dentist for preventive treatments like scaling
can prevent it much more effectively.
Baryeunyoung Dental Clinic understands the importance of natural teeth,
so we provide preventive treatments like scaling
along with brushing education, which can often be overlooked,
to help patients maintain their oral health in their daily lives.
Today, we learned about
gum disease, which approaches silently.
We hope you visit the dentist in advance for simple treatments
to protect your gum health and preserve your natural teeth for a long time.
Thank you!^^

Frequently Asked Questions
What disease causes bleeding and smelly gums?
Bleeding and smelly gums can primarily be a sign of periodontal disease, a type of gum disease. It often starts as gingivitis and, if left untreated, can progress to periodontitis, which dissolves the gum bone.
Are oral medications (like ‘Indol’ or ‘I-eotan’) effective for gum disease?
No, oral medications alone cannot cure periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory response caused by tartar and plaque, so physically removing them is paramount, and medication is only a supplementary measure.
Are oral hygiene aids like Waterpiks or dental floss helpful for managing gum disease?
Yes, oral hygiene aids such as Waterpiks, dental floss, and interdental brushes are very effective in managing gum disease. These tools, along with efficient brushing, improve oral hygiene and greatly help prevent gum disease.
Can gum bone that has receded due to gum disease recover?
No, once gum bone has receded, it cannot be regenerated. Damaged gum bone due to progressing periodontal disease is difficult to recover, so early prevention and management are crucial.
What is most important for preventing gum disease?
For gum disease prevention, efficient brushing and the use of oral hygiene aids like Waterpiks and dental floss are important. Additionally, regular visits to the dentist for preventive treatments like scaling are most effective.
