Anti-Aging Procedures: Types and Effects Categorized
Anti-aging procedures like Botox, fillers, thread lifts, and lifting devices can be categorized into three main types based on their effects: volume restoration, structural lifting, and skin regeneration/elasticity improvement.

Hello,
I am Park Jeong-geun,
Director of Faceplus Plastic Surgery Clinic.

From Botox and fillers to thread lifts and lifting devices,
there are various types of anti-aging procedures,
but they can be broadly divided into three categories
depending on the problem they address.

Today, I will clearly classify them
based on their effects.

1. Procedures that restore volume - Botox·Fillers
As we age, the facial fat layer diminishes,
and bones gradually resorb, leading to volume loss.

Botox works by inhibiting muscle contraction to alleviate forehead, frown line, and crow’s feet
wrinkles.
The effect typically lasts for about 4-6 months.

Fillers involve directly injecting ingredients like hyaluronic acid to fill in sunken areas,
and are used for nasolabial folds, cheeks, and jawlines.
Volume procedures show immediate and clear changes, but their effect on lifting sagging tissue itself is limited.
2. Procedures that provide structural lift - Thread Lifts
Sagging cannot be resolved by simply adding volume.
Thread lifting is a procedure that involves inserting bio-absorbable threads such as PDO or PCL under the skin to directly lift sagging tissue
and simultaneously induce collagen production.

According to a 2019 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology,
PDO thread lifting showed significant effects on improving skin elasticity and sagging up to 6 months after the procedure,
and histologically, collagen rearrangement and new collagen
production were confirmed.

Depending on the type of thread, the effects typically last for about 6-12 months for PDO and 12-24 months for PCL.
3. Procedures that enhance skin regeneration and elasticity
Apart from lifting tissue, it is also important to improve the quality of the skin itself.

HIFU-based lifting devices
deliver high-intensity focused ultrasound energy to the SMAS layer to induce collagen regeneration.
They are used when reduced elasticity is the primary concern rather than sagging,
or when combined with thread lifting to enhance the effects.

Regenerative injections directly stimulate cell regeneration in the dermal layer to improve skin texture, elasticity, and hydration.
They tend to have a significant synergistic effect when combined with other procedures.
4. What is the recommended order of approach?
Anti-aging cannot be solved with a single procedure.

This is because sagging, volume loss, and skin aging occur simultaneously at different layers.
If sagging is the primary concern,
it is generally recommended to first perform a structural lift with thread lifting,
then use fillers for areas requiring volume restoration,
and combine device treatments or regenerative injections for skin regeneration.

If the order is changed, efficiency may decrease,
or the results may deviate from the desired outcome.
The most accurate way to determine which approach is needed first for your skin
is to have your skin condition directly assessed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the effects of Botox and fillers?
Botox works by inhibiting muscle contraction to alleviate forehead, frown line, and crow’s feet wrinkles, with effects lasting about 4-6 months. Fillers, by injecting hyaluronic acid and other substances, are used to restore volume in sunken areas such as nasolabial folds, cheeks, and jawlines.
How do thread lifts improve sagging?
Thread lifting involves inserting bio-absorbable threads like PDO or PCL under the skin to directly lift sagging tissue and simultaneously induce collagen production, which helps improve skin elasticity and sagging.
What effects can be expected from lifting devices and regenerative injections?
HIFU-based lifting devices deliver high-intensity focused ultrasound energy to the SMAS layer to induce collagen regeneration, thereby improving elasticity. Regenerative injections stimulate cell regeneration in the dermal layer, helping to improve skin texture, elasticity, and hydration.
What is the recommended order for anti-aging procedures?
Generally, if sagging is present, it is recommended to first perform a structural lift with thread lifting, followed by fillers for areas needing volume restoration, and then combine device treatments or regenerative injections for skin regeneration.
How long do the effects of thread lifting last?
The duration of thread lifting effects varies depending on the type of thread used. PDO threads typically last 6-12 months, while PCL threads can last around 12-24 months.
